Prep Sports Round Up 09.10.26

It has been a busy week of sport at Truro School Prep, with pupils pulling on their kits and heading out to represent the school in tag rugby, rugby and hockey. Thanks to our incredible staff, who sent through these reports on how the matches went:

Tag Rugby v Polwhele House

This week at Truro School Prep, pupils enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of tag rugby, with two exciting fixtures taking place against Polwhele House.

Both games were high-scoring and full of action, with an excellent level of skill, teamwork and determination on display across both pitches. It was a really competitive afternoon, with all of the children representing the school brilliantly and playing the games in a great spirit.

A huge thank you to Polwhele House for hosting us and for two thoroughly enjoyable games of rugby!

Year 3 and 4 Rugby and Tag Rugby at Plymouth College

It is always exciting to see pupils embrace the opportunity of representing the school, especially when many are experiencing it for the very first time. The Year 3 and 4 Rugby and Tag Rugby teams recently enjoyed a fantastic opportunity to play away at Plymouth College, with several children taking part in their first school contact rugby games.

All of the games were played in a wonderful spirit, with pupils showing great enthusiasm, determination and sportsmanship throughout. As the matches progressed, the children developed their understanding of the game, learnt new skills and grew in confidence on the pitch. They worked hard on passing the ball out wide to create space and moving forward positively with the ball in hand. Perhaps most impressively, they mastered one of rugby’s trickiest concepts: learning that players must run forwards while passing the ball backwards to their teammates!

One of the highlights of the event was seeing the children work together as a team, encouraging one another and celebrating each other’s successes. Tries were scored, tags were taken, and tackles were made, all with beaming smiles and endless enthusiasm for the games being played.

We are incredibly proud of all the pupils who took part. Their positive attitudes, teamwork and willingness to learn made the event a great success. It was wonderful to see so much progress in such a short space of time, and a lovely afternoon was rounded off with cookies and squash in the sunshine, giving everyone the opportunity to relax, reflect on their achievements, and celebrate a fantastic afternoon of rugby, teamwork and friendship.

U8 and U9 Hockey at Plymouth College, Thursday 8th October

For some of our younger children, this was their first experience of a ‘school fixture’. How exciting! A long bus trip, socialising on the bus with their peers, lots of hockey, something to eat and drink afterwards and plenty of sunshine: what more could one ask for.

There was so much effort on show, both physically and tactically, as the players got used to the space and what was needed to keep the ball away from the opposition. What started off as a ‘bees around a honeypot’ slowly grew into more players finding space and passes being made. With goals and ½ goals being awarded for the processes as well as getting the ball in the goal, it was hard to keep track of it all! However, that is what made it such a great experience. There was so much progress in how they went about playing the game that it didn’t really matter if the ball ended up in the goal because each and every player started to understand the need to get away from the ball carrier, find a space and be ready to receive the ball.

Our Year 3s (Annabel, Tilly, George, Harper N-P, Clara, Florrie, Maeve and Henry S) were awesome on their first school outing and the Year 4s (Zac, Rollo, Merryn, Bethany, Tristan, Arabella and Evie) showed plenty of support and companionship along the way. In fact there was one passage of play where Henry passed to Bethany, who controlled the ball beautifully and passed it onto Merryn who proceeded to go forward with the ball, which demonstrated their ability to work together. Zac showed his flair and understanding of the game with some fabulous stick skills and accurate passing.

But the standout moment had to be when Rollo stood up after colliding with a Plymouth College player. He stopped the game, checked that the other player was okay and gave them possession of the ball. Kindness and compassion can never be forgotten, whatever the situation.

Thanks again to all the parents and supporters who made the long trip ‘out of the county’!

Well done to every pupil who pulled on a Truro School shirt this week, and thank you to the staff and parents who made it all possible. We look forward to more sporting success to come.
