The Year 7 Instrumental Scheme Singing Concert, held at Truro School Methodist Church, was a joyful celebration of a year of musical confidence, dedication and performance by our Year 7 pupils.
The concert marked the culmination of Truro School’s Instrumental Scheme, an integral part of the Year 7 curriculum, where pupils benefit from weekly music lessons that give every pupil the opportunity to learn an orchestral instrument or, for those with prior experience, to develop their skills further. One parent remarked, “We really enjoyed the performance, and considering our child hadn’t really played anything previously, I was so impressed. I loved it!”
Instruments such as trumpet, keyboard and cello are just some of the options available, allowing pupils to explore new musical pathways.
The evening’s programme reflected the breadth and enthusiasm behind the scheme. Vocal performances included The Lion Sleeps Tonight, performed by the Year 7 girls, and a lively rendition of Pinball Wizard from our Year 7 boys.
The Chamber Woodwind Group’s Hakuna Matata, and Chamber Orchestra’s performance of Pirates of the Caribbean, showcased the opportunities for collective musical development.
Throughout the evening, instrumental ensembles showed their progress from across the year. String players performed Listen to the Rhythm, Lazy Cowboy and the energetic Sword Dance, while the flute performance of Rock Pool Bay featured impressive improvised solos.
Our clarinet players performed Ode to Joy, You Are My Sunshine and Frère Jacques, and the brass ensemble delivered a spirited rendition of When the Saints.
The concert was a fitting finale to a year of hard work and musical growth, giving pupils the opportunity to perform to their peers and families.
It also showcased the strength of music provision at Truro School, where pupils are encouraged to discover the joy of music and develop skills that will stay with them far beyond Year 7. With the opening of the new Music Centre in September (see first-look photos here), we are looking forward to seeing music reach even greater heights at Truro School.
