From Dubai to Cornwall – Why Our Head of Boarding Chose a UK Boarding Education at Truro School
For many international families, choosing the right UK boarding school is really important. Truro School offers a welcoming and supportive environment, combining excellent British education (Truro School sits in the Top 10% nationally for value-added at A-Level and also ranks in the Top 5 Best Value UK Boarding Schools) with the benefits of life on the Cornish coast.
Our Head of Boarding, Mr McKeown, understands this first-hand. Before joining Truro School, he spent over a decade working in leading international schools in Dubai, including roles with the GEMS Education group and the Swiss International School in Dubai.
Having experienced both international education in the UAE and life in a British boarding school community, he shares his perspective on why families from cities like Dubai are increasingly drawn to schools like Truro School in Cornwall.
We caught up with Mr McKeown to ask him about his move from Dubai to Cornwall.
You joined Truro School after working at the Swiss International School in Dubai. What initially attracted you and your family to Cornwall?
Before joining Truro School, I spent many years working in international education in Dubai, including roles within the GEMS Education group and later at the Swiss International School. It was a wonderful period for us as a family and professionally very rewarding.
During that time, my wife worked as a nurse at Dubai English Speaking School (DESS), and our sons attended Wellington Primary before moving on to GEMS Wellington International School. Dubai gave us incredible exposure to a vibrant international community.
After twelve years overseas, however, we began thinking about the next stage for our family. We wanted our children to experience life in the UK, build long-term friendships, and grow up in a calmer, more settled environment as they moved toward university.
Cornwall offered something quite special: space, nature, and a strong sense of community.
When we visited Truro School, the warmth of the boarding community and the genuine focus on student wellbeing and pastoral care immediately felt like the right fit for our family.
How did your first impressions of Truro School compare with your experience of international schools in Dubai?
Having worked in international education for many years, I was used to diverse and dynamic communities, and Truro School shares many of those strengths.
What struck me most was the warmth of the boarding houses. They feel genuinely welcoming and family-like. Staff know the students very well and there is a strong culture of looking after one another.
In many ways, it combines the global outlook of an international school with the close-knit atmosphere of a traditional British boarding school.
Students are truly known as individuals here, which makes a real difference to their experience.
For families living in fast-paced cities like Dubai, what makes Cornwall a special place to live and learn?
Cornwall offers something many families value when considering UK boarding schools – the chance for young people to grow up surrounded by nature while still receiving an excellent education.
Students spend their free time surfing, walking coastal paths, sailing, or taking part in activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. These experiences help build independence, resilience, and confidence.
At the same time, Truro School remains internationally minded, welcoming students from across the UK and around the world. So while Cornwall provides a calm and beautiful setting, the school community itself is global and outward-looking.
What differences have you noticed between growing up in Cornwall and life in a large international city?
One of the biggest differences is the sense of freedom young people have here.
Students spend more time outdoors and develop independence in a safe and supportive environment. Many of the most memorable experiences happen beyond the classroom, whether that’s surfing at the beach, coastal walks, sport, music, or simply spending time together outside.
Life also moves at a slightly calmer pace, which allows young people to build strong friendships and find a healthy balance between school, activities, and downtime. This balance positively impacts wellbeing, something reflected in our annual boarders’ survey, where students consistently report high levels of happiness at Truro School.
Cornwall offers a safe and inspiring setting for UK boarding students, with freedom to explore nature, take part in outdoor activities, and enjoy a balanced lifestyle; something international families from fast-paced cities like Dubai particularly value.
Boarding can feel like a big step for families living overseas. How does Truro School help international students feel settled?
We understand that moving away from home to attend a UK boarding school can feel like a big step, especially for international families.
At Truro School, we focus on creating a warm and supportive environment from the moment students arrive. Our boarding houses are welcoming and close-knit, allowing staff to get to know each student very well.
Shared meals, daily routines, and a wide range of evening and weekend activities help students quickly build friendships and feel part of the community. Before long, the boarding house becomes exactly what we hope it will be – a genuine home from home.
As a parent as well as a boarding leader, what have been the biggest benefits of moving your own family to Cornwall?
For our family, the biggest benefit has been quality of life.
Cornwall is a wonderful place for children to grow up; it’s safe, welcoming, and full of opportunities to explore. Weekends often involve visiting beaches, walking along the coast, or spending time outdoors together with our dog, Alfie.
It’s been a lovely contrast to city life and has given us more time together as a family. It has also been important for our children to experience life in the UK as they grow older and begin building friendships and connections here ahead of university.
What would you say directly to families in Dubai considering a British boarding education?
Having lived in the UAE for many years, I understand what international families value: opportunity, safety, community, and strong educational outcomes.
Truro School offers all of these within a supportive UK boarding environment set in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Students benefit from an excellent British education, a wide range of co-curricular opportunities, and a boarding community that genuinely prioritises pastoral care and wellbeing.
