Weekly News from Pre-Prep 13.02.26

It has been another busy and creative week in Pre-Prep at Truro School, with pupils across all year groups embracing new challenges and exciting opportunities for learning.

In Nursery, the children have been making excellent progress in phonics, learning the sounds of o, c and k this week. Along with creating a beautiful book based on the story Dear Zoo, they have also channelled their creativity into Valentine’s Day artwork, using a variety of materials, including clay and cardboard, to craft their special pictures. It has been wonderful to see their imaginations at work as they experimented with different textures and techniques.

Reception pupils have been putting their imaginations into overdrive by inventing their very own machines. After designing their creations, the children confidently shared with one another what job their machine would do and practised writing down their ideas. In Maths, they have been revisiting the concepts of one more and one less, using ten frames to deepen their understanding of number bonds to 10 and strengthen their confidence with early number work.

Year 1 has combined creativity and precision in literacy by using their knowledge of syllables to compose their own animal haikus. Inspired by Victorian paintings, the children produced some wonderfully descriptive poetry. In Science, they have been investigating materials, sorting them according to their properties and discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each. Their thoughtful observations and lively discussions demonstrated excellent scientific curiosity.

Meanwhile, Year 2 have been building their confidence in Maths by exploring how to add and subtract 10 using a number square, before progressing to two-digit addition and subtraction with column methods and practical equipment. In Music, pupils shone on the ukuleles, while in art, they turned their attention to the wonders of space, studying the incredible colours of the planets in our solar system. Inspired by what they discovered, they used coloured pencils to design their own vibrant and imaginative planets and inks to create swirling planet prints.

It has been a week filled with creativity, collaboration and curiosity across Pre-Prep, and we look forward to seeing what next week will bring.
