Life Skills in Action: Year 6 First Aid

As a core part of their Year 6 Diploma, our pupils are discovering that First Aid is a vital skill for life.

Across the year, our Year 6 pupils rotate in small groups to learn everything from how to treat bumps and scrapes to the technicalities of CPR, the Recovery Position and use of an Adrenaline Auto-Injector. Led by Prep Medical Care Lead, Mrs Cameron, pupils even gain hands-on experience with the School’s defibrillator, building the confidence to act when it matters most.

This year, we are thrilled to offer a new immersive experience thanks to the generous support of ‘In Safe Hands Health & Safety Training Consultancy’. Following 6AW’s visit in November, 6FR took their turn this week to learn first aid in a unique, child-friendly training environment.

The session took an exciting turn when this week’s group crossed paths with professional paramedics undergoing advanced training at the centre. During the final role-play scenarios, as the children practised calling 999, the paramedics arrived on the scene with their kit to assist.

This provided a thrilling, true-to-life taste of emergency response that the pupils won’t soon forget! Our sincere thanks to In Safe Hands for their generous support and, of course, to the paramedics for stepping in.

The first aid course is just a small part of the Year 6 Diploma that all of our eldest pupils undertake in their final year at Truro School Prep. The Diploma offers pupils a distinctive and enriching experience in their final year, shaped by the school’s independence from the state curriculum and Year 6 standardised testing.

This freedom allows learning to remain broad, engaging and purposeful, at a time when teaching and learning in Years 5 and 6 can otherwise be influenced by assessment requirements elsewhere.

Through the Diploma, pupils develop confidence and critical thinking by learning to debate, exploring the impact of future careers, and presenting on a topic of their choice to a judging panel. These academic elements are complemented by an abundance of enjoyable co-curricular opportunities, including this first aid training, helping pupils to finish their primary years as confident, well-rounded learners ready for the next stage of their education.
