Old Truronian and former Head Boy Alex Martin (CO20) recently joined our Sixth Formers at their Debate Club to offer his expertise.
Alex is the Competition and Oracy Lead at the English-Speaking Union, a Trustee at SMART Schools Trust, and a former President of the Exeter Students’ Guild. His insights this week helped debate club students Bea, Noah, Flo, Jackson and Tilly to construct and deliver engaging arguments on the subjects of climate change and holding tech companies accountable for the content on their platforms.
Both teams shared their arguments and, while presenting, were able to gain valuable feedback on their research, methods, accuracy, delivery, signposting and structure, as well as overall hints and tips during this masterclass.
Discussing their opening lines, content and speaking timelines, the group quizzed Alex to gain as much as possible from the session. He listened to their ideas and offered constructive feedback, whilst encouraging students to be moral, justifiable and to learn from the opposition.
After leaving Truro School in 2020, Alex studied for a BA (Hons) in History and an MA in Middle East Studies at the University of Exeter.
Thank you to Alex for giving his valuable time. Engagement with our Old Truronians and wider community is key in helping our pupils gain real-life experience and skills from outside the classroom.
