Senior pupils are busy preparing for their play ‘The Bubblegum Tree’.

We welcome you to view the trailer above for this exciting performance – a professional-level production by Truro School pupils, both on stage, and behind the scenes, where pupils have been engaged in tech, stage building and props.

The school will be presenting the play over 4 evenings, November 19th – 22nd, in The Burrell Theatre.

Secrets, spies, and a bubblegum tree that could change everything. Truro School drama department is proud to produce the second ever production of Jon Welch’s The Bubblegum Tree.

Berlin 1973.  A divided Germany.  The height of the Cold War.  In East Berlin, an ambitious young choreographer plans to mount a ballet production that will amaze the world and prove to the corrupt West that East German culture is thriving and relevant in the successful Communist regime.  Rehearsals begin, and a ground-breaking plan for a performance in West Berlin is hatched.  But there are forces at work that cannot be ignored – the Stasi secret police are listening in, and in West Berlin, a group of reckless schoolkids are hatching a foolhardy plan that could jeopardise not only the project, but the lives of the dancers involved.

George, who is dancing in the play, has said, “I am playing a Prince in the main scene, in the line-up of dancers. Dance is an important part of the play; the dancers have been receiving lots of direction and learning choreography with Tee Jay. Being part of the production has given me confidence and helped with my public speaking. I am in year 11 and am taking GCSE Drama, a subject I am considering studying further next year”.

Kip is in Year 11 and playing the part of Sabina, “There were no opportunities to do drama at my old school. Here at Truro School, I get to be involved in lots of drama productions. I find it fun and enjoy spending my Wednesday afternoons rehearsing. Last year I was a drama tec, so I assisted with lighting and making props, but this year I am excited to be performing. By joining the productions, I have made lots of friends and have found the department very supportive. ”
