Confidence in Abundance as House Music Shines

The Chapel was the setting for an outstanding display of Truro School’s musical talent as our House Music Finals got underway. The evening showcased representatives from our four houses, School, Wickett, Vinter, and Smith, who had been whittled down from 40 solo and four ensemble entries, in a hotly contested battle for much-coveted house points.

The House Music Competition is one of several exciting events that span music, sport, general knowledge, and more, that help to foster friendly rivalry, inter-peer group friendships, and create a point of school pride.

With Head of Music at Truro Prep, Angela Renshaw, on hand to adjudicate, the evening showcased some outstanding performances, from extraordinary piano recitals from Sarang, Katie, Aidan, Buzz, and Lilla, and a striking violin solo from Isaac, to two rousing sax renditions from Monty and George, and some beautiful and poignant voice solos from Celia and Imogen.

The evening also showed the breadth of instruments and genres studied at Truro School, with stunning performances on the cornet from Trystan, the oboe from Clara, the bassoon from Patrick, and two memorable performances (one solo, one ensemble) on the accordion from Kes and Buzz, respectively. There was also a rocking performance from Static Bloom featuring George, Erin, Tilly, and Freddy, who delivered an exciting rendition of ‘Celebrity Skin’ by Hole.

There was also a rousing performance from the Wind Band, featuring Van Morrison’s ‘Moondance’ and a Disney Medley to entertain while judging was completed.

The evening was completed with thoughtful, purposeful, and constructive feedback from Ms Renshaw, who praised the joy and confidence that was so palpable throughout. The overall prizes were awarded to the following:

Runner Up Solo: Trystan, ‘Carnival of Venice’ by H. Round for Vinter

Winner Solo: Aidan, ‘Il Porco Rosso’ by J. Hisaishi for Smith

Runner Up Ensemble: Static Bloom (George, Erin, Tilly, and Freddy), ‘Celebrity Skin’ by Hole for Various

Winner Ensemble: The Squeeze Boys (Kes and Buzz), ‘Dons Bunans and Trejagorran Fury’ by M. O’Connor and N. Davey for Various

A huge thank you to all of the music department, the peripatetic teachers, Ms Renshaw, and our incredible pupils and students, and their families, for creating such a memorable and enjoyable evening for all. Well done to all of our performers for representing your houses with such confidence and courage.
