Beach Safari Shenanigans

Making the most of our unique Cornish location, pupils from Year 1 at Truro School Prep excitedly headed out on a sea safari to Tolcarne Beach, Newquay, where they met Mr FT of ‘Big FT’s Shack’.

As part of their learning on habitats, sea creatures, sustainability, and kindness, the group searched for sea creatures amongst the rockpools, finding lots of sea life and laughter along the way!

Before heading off to explore, the children received a safety briefing, including advice about rockfalls, undercurrents, shifting sands and protecting the environment.

As part of their adventure, the children made their way through the rockpools of ‘Starfish Alley’ and the ‘Nursery Pool’, learning how to identify male and female sea creatures. Almost all the children were able to find their own hermit crabs in the low-tide pools, which was very exciting.

They also found Orange Breadcrumb Sponges (SpongeBob Squarepants), brown crab, sea slugs, and learned about exoskeletons.

Pupils volunteered to become ‘Sea Scientists’, learning how to hold crabs gently to avoid injury to themselves or the animals. Throughout the day, they gained fascinating insights into geography, geology, habitats, and marine life, learning how different creatures live, reproduce, and feed. They also had the chance to clamber safely over the rocks, exploring shallow pools and surfaces, before ending their expedition with a well-earned beach picnic.

We would like to thank Mr FT for providing such a wonderful and memorable experience for our pupils. This is the second time our Pre-Prep pupils have participated in the sea safari, and it is now established as a must-do trip for the Year 1 curriculum.
