Truro School, one of the leading independent schools in Cornwall, is celebrating another year of outstanding A-Level success. With 50% of grades at A*/A and over 80% at A*-B, our Sixth Form continues to achieve results that place us among the top-performing schools in Cornwall and nationally.
As one of the best schools in Cornwall, Truro School continues to set the benchmark for academic excellence. This year’s outcomes further reinforce our position as the leading A-Level provider in Cornwall. Last year we were placed in the top 10% nationally for value added at A-Level, and these results are stronger again.
Reflecting on the results, Head of Truro School, Mr Andy Johnson, said:
“We are extremely proud of our students and today’s results. These headline figures are another year of even stronger outcomes for the young people we educate. Their ambition, courage, and dedication, matched by the support of their families and friends, and the expertise and inspiration of our staff and Sixth Form team, is a source of joy to all associated with our School community.
The value of the Truro School Sixth Form to the futures of these young people is immense and is shown by more than the exceptional grades. By 10am today over 99% of our students had the security of being on pathways of their own choice. These included success with all our Oxford applications, at Imperial, UCL, with Dentistry, and on specialist training courses, in degree apprenticeships, and careers in creative industries. As a School we know that an education built on values and supporting diverse individual ambitions paves the way for our leavers to thrive in and positively shape a complex and rapidly changing world.”
Academic success was achieved across the curriculum as Truro School’s Sixth Form is recognised as a leading choice for A-Level success in Cornwall. Half the cohort achieved A*s in Geology and in Design, and in six subjects, from Religious Studies to Further Maths, every student achieved A*-B. Excellence extended beyond A-Levels too, with over 73% of EPQ projects awarded A*. In the Leiths cookery qualification 90% achieved Distinction or Merit, and in PE CTEC 100% of grades were Distinctions and Distinction Stars.
All Sixth Formers have benefitted from our distinctive Sixth Form Diploma programme that runs alongside A-Level study, enabling them to extend their learning and develop as individuals and as leaders beyond the examined curriculum. The Diploma is just part of Truro School’s commitment to supporting and empowering the young people in our care.
Our staff remain available to advise and support ongoing ambitions and decision-making over the days and weeks ahead. We have also been reaching out to our fantastic boarding community who have been celebrating across the globe, as well as with us here today.
Proud as the School is of our overall outcomes, the real story of A-level results and their impact is told by the young people themselves. Follow the link below to view just some of the experiences we have been fortunate enough to share today.
Prospective Sixth Formers and their families are warmly invited to the Sixth Form Open Evening on Tuesday, September 23, from 5pm to 8pm. This is a great chance to hear about life and opportunity at Truro School Sixth Form. For further details, please visit www.truroschool.com/open-evening/
Our A-Level results day was a celebration not only of academic achievement but also of the personal journeys behind the grades. These are just some of the experiences we have been fortunate enough to share. Use the link below to read the stories in full.
Mia (AAA*) in Biology, Chemistry and Geology, and Arthur (A*AAB) in Geology, History, English and Theatre Studies, took very different paths but shared a love for co-curricular life, from Chicago to Twelfth Night and jazz band. Mia heads to Exeter University to study Biochemistry, while Arthur begins History and Politics at Oxford University. Both credited their teachers for their success: “Start revising sooner than you think” and “Create your resources as you go.” “Mrs Vaughan for English was really, really helpful and helped me develop my love for drama,” Arthur added.
Pax (AAA and Distinction in Leiths) will study Resource and Exploration Geology at the Camborne School of Mines. His grades exceeded predictions thanks to focused revision and “loads of support” from teachers who ran extra clinics and sessions. Balancing academics with sport, drama, and music kept him motivated: “It’s just so exciting to see him achieve academically in a way that reflects how his mind works,” said his mother, Esmé. Megan (AAAA), Deputy Head Girl, joined in Lower Sixth and thrived in leadership and sustainability roles. Taking a year out before reapplying to study Biology, she reflected: “Maths, my surprise top A-level, was a highlight. I’m so grateful to all my teachers for their support.”
Eleanor (A*AA) in Psychology, Business, and Geography, heads to Exeter to study Business Management with a year abroad. “You get a lot more personalised support here than you would at the college,” she said, valuing Truro School’s welcoming community.
Thea (AAA and A in EPQ), now pursuing History, shared: “Don’t base your degree choices solely on grades or expectations. I almost chose a path for the wrong reasons, but I’m now pursuing history because it’s what I truly enjoy.”
Martha (A*AA) in Biology, Chemistry, and Geology hopes to pursue Dentistry. Her advice to future Sixth Formers: “Just keep going.”
Charlie (A*AA) in Geology, Business, and Core Maths is now heading to study Geology. “We couldn’t have asked for more support from the staff,” said his mum. “Whatever happened today, we knew they’d already given him everything he needed to succeed.”
