SuperStrings is a vibrant and inclusive string orchestra created through a CMST collaboration, with a simple aim: to bring young musicians together and enjoy making music.
What began as a one-off play day, designed to encourage pupils back into ensembles after the disruption of Covid, has grown into a thriving group of over 50 young string players.
It brings together players from a number of smaller string groups that meet regularly across the county. We meet as the SuperStrings group once or twice a term, making new friends and experiencing the excitement of playing in a much larger ensemble.
With members ranging in age from 8 to 16, SuperStrings welcomes players of all abilities and experience levels. Whether a musician is an experienced ensemble player or can only play a few notes, there is a place for everyone. The emphasis is on making music together, building confidence and most importantly having fun.
SuperStrings is all about coming together, sharing the joy of music and discovering just how powerful we can sound as one. Big sound, big smiles and a place for everyone – that’s SuperStrings!
With more than 40 years of experience teaching violin and viola, Karen Frost has dedicated her career to sharing a lifelong passion for music and education. Her musical training began at Dartington College of Arts before completing her teacher training at Rolle College in Exmouth.
Throughout her career, Karen has inspired and supported young people, helping them develop confidence, creativity and a lasting enjoyment of music. She has directed large string ensembles, led educational workshops and taught musicians of all ages and abilities, and continues her work today as an Upper Strings Teacher with CMST.
Her creative and successful approach to teaching has been widely recognised, including a feature on the front page of Primary Times highlighting the positive impact of her work with children and young people. Alongside her teaching career, Karen remains an active performer with local ensembles, including the Three Spires Orchestra, and performs regularly with the professional string quartet Classical Strings, reflecting her ongoing commitment to musical excellence both on and off the stage.
