Year 2 Explore the Woodlands

It was a joyful afternoon of outdoor learning and discovery as our Year 2 pupils headed to the extensive woodland area by the Prep drive for their Forest School session, led by Forest School lead Mrs Stableforth.

There was much to explore, but it was equally important to first build knowledge: discussing safety and expectations, from never eating anything in the woods to carrying sticks carefully, as well as navigating road safety on the walk down. Our Year 2 pupils demonstrated excellent understanding and care throughout, putting that knowledge into practice as they foraged for leaves and nuts and examined the woodland’s array of stunning wild fungi, learning how they grow and why all are best left untouched.

With knowledge in place, pupils were ready to be challenged. Gathering natural materials, they created outdoor art from leaves, bark and twigs, then moved on to den building, working together to design, construct and test structures against the elements.

Throughout the session, children were empowered to make their own decisions, choosing how to build, what to create and how to solve problems as they arose. This is just one of the amazing outdoor education opportunities our lucky children have, and it left our Year 2 pupils with skills and confidence that will stay with them well beyond the classroom.
