Congratulations to our fantastic Year 2 pupils, who have achieved a Gold Certificate in the RSPB’s Wild Challenge for Schools after a year of enthusiastic participation in Forest School.
Throughout the year, pupils completed 16 nature-based activities to experience and support wildlife, spend more time outdoors, and create habitats that encourage animals to live and thrive on our school grounds. Their commitment and curiosity have been inspiring, and the award is a well-deserved recognition of their efforts.
As part of the challenge, Year 2 pupils worked collaboratively to build two hedgehog houses, a bat box, and a bug hibernation bunker to provide shelter for local wildlife. Impressively, all of these were constructed using materials already available, reinforcing the importance of sustainability and resourcefulness.
The project was enriched by support and inspiration from a range of organisations, including the RSPB through their Wild Challenge and Birdwatch initiatives, the Wildlife Trusts with their Wildlife Watch activity sheets, the Woodland Trust, which provided free trees planted by the pupils this spring, and The Buzz Club at Sussex University for citizen science ideas. Pupils were also encouraged to continue their nature journeys at home by taking part in similar activities.
In addition to their conservation work, Year 2 has contributed to the school’s wider environmental goals, helping Truro School maintain its status as a School for Nature and a Plastic Free School in partnership with Surfers Against Sewage.
Mrs Stableforth, Forest School Lead, said: “It’s been lovely spending time at Forest School with you all. Have fun exploring nature, be gentle with all animals, and always stay curious.”
Well done, Year 2, on a wonderful achievement and for your dedication to protecting the natural world and thanks to our dedicated Prep staff members who drive these important environmental initiatives.
