Year 12 Attend UK Mining Conference in Falmouth

Year 12 Geology students were fortunate to attend the UK Mining Conference in Falmouth, where they gained valuable insight into current developments within the mining and geothermal energy sectors.

During the morning sessions, students listened to presentations from industry professionals representing organisations such as Eden Geothermal, GEL, and the North East Combined Authority, who discussed the latest advances in deep geothermal energy projects. A second session focused on developments in lithium extraction, a critical mineral for the transition to green technologies, with speakers highlighting projects in both the North East and South West of England.

At the end of each session, panel discussions provided an excellent opportunity for students to hear differing professional perspectives and ask their own questions about the industry. In the afternoon, students visited the Camborne School of Mines, where they attended a talk on careers and developments within the mining sector before using microscopes to examine the Cornish granite.

This practical session helped students understand the geological processes responsible for the region’s rich lithium deposits and reinforced links to the topics discussed earlier in the day.

A huge thank you to all the event organisers and Geology staff for facilitating this really interesting event.
