Our lucky Truro School pupils were treated to a writer’s workshop with author Wyl Menmuir. Wyl is an acclaimed British author whose work includes Booker Prize-longlisted fiction and award-winning nature writing. Some of his books include The Many, The Draw of the Sea, and The Heart of the Woods.
The first session, held in the library, included some Year 10 pupils specially selected to attend, alongside members of the Truro School Book Club. During this session, Wyl broke down the four stages of writing a book:
He urged pupils to keep their writing playful, sharing that much of his own material had stemmed from playful starting points and note-making.
Wyl then hosted a second workshop for our Year 8 pupils in the Burrell Theatre, where he talked about the use of light, sound and texture to inspire writing, encouraging our budding writers to step away from “thinking” about a landscape and instead use specific physical senses to anchor their work.
We want to thank Wyl and our English Department for making these valuable and memorable sessions possible, and we look forward to seeing the prose it inspires in our pupils.
