Weaving Wonders

As part of our exciting programme of Wednesday Afternoon Activities, pupils have been exploring a brand-new weaving class this term.

Under the expert guidance of Dr Clarke, a member of the Cornish Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers, pupils have been learning the fundamentals of weaving and creating their own colourful designs. Dr Clarke, who has over 18 years of experience in the craft, has been delighted to share one of her favourite hobbies with the group.

Everyone in the class is new to weaving and has been using mushroom crates as makeshift looms, an inventive and accessible way to start. Because of the crate size, pupils have begun with smaller projects such as scarves, bracelets, and placemats. After half-term, they plan to progress to larger weaves, experimenting with bigger frames and even some festive, Christmas-themed creations.

Pupil Liane has been working on an ambitious tapestry weaving design, incorporating fish motifs, a challenging but rewarding technique. The group has also been introduced to a two-shaft loom, with special thanks to Joseph, who successfully fixed a technical issue with it!

The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves in this new craft, developing both patience and creativity along the way. A huge thank you to Dr Clarke for inspiring our young weavers. Our programme of popular Wednesday Afternoon Activities allows all pupils to have a break from their regular timetable to participate in different activities for enjoyment and to learn or improve their skills.
