The Power of Maths

Maths is having a strong year nationally, with the proportion of A-level entries awarded the top grades rising for the third consecutive year, alongside growing numbers choosing to study the subject. At Truro School, we are seeing that enthusiasm reflected in our own results, with our Maths students achieving the strongest value-added performance in more than a decade.

At A-Level, 100% of students studying Further Maths achieved A–B grades, with half achieving A*–A. In A-Level Maths, 100% of students achieved A–C grades, with 50% achieving an A or A*.

Behind every grade is a student who has been known, challenged to think deeply, supported when concepts are difficult and encouraged to develop the confidence to tackle increasingly complex mathematical problems.

Students are encouraged to understand why something works, to explore different approaches and to develop the resilience needed when a problem does not immediately have an obvious solution.

Our teachers know their students as individuals, allowing them to provide targeted support, stretch those who are ready for greater challenge and help students build confidence in areas where they may initially struggle. That combination of academic challenge and personal support is an important part of the Truro School experience.

This year’s A-Level maths students are progressing to some of the UK’s leading universities to study subjects ranging from Mathematics, Physics and Engineering to Medicine, Economics, Architecture, Geology and Business. Destinations include Imperial College London, UCL, the universities of Warwick, Manchester, Bristol, Bath, Southampton, Durham, Exeter, St Andrews, Cardiff, Loughborough, Sheffield and Reading, alongside the University of Plymouth.

The same success has been seen in GCSE results, with 73 pupils achieving 9-7 grades in Maths and 19 pupils achieving 9-7 grades in Further Maths.

The success of last year’s students under Mr James Butterworth and his team provides an exciting foundation for the next chapter of Maths at Truro School, with Mrs Aysha Bennett joining the school as our new Head of Maths.

Mrs Bennett joins us from Hill House School, where she was Deputy Head of Maths, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a passion for helping students develop both their mathematical understanding and confidence.

She will lead the department from September, working alongside our experienced team of Maths teachers to build on the strong progress already being made and ensure students continue to be challenged, supported and inspired by the subject.

For our students, that means an exciting future for Maths at Truro School, one that combines high expectations and academic challenge with the individual support that helps every student make the most of their ability.
