Summer WAAs Come to a Close

The final Wednesday Afternoon Activities (WAAs) of the academic year brought to a close another term of outstanding co-curricular activity at Truro School, with pupils taking part both on-site and at a variety of locations across Cornwall.

WAAs provide pupils with the opportunity to step beyond the classroom and engage in a wide range of pursuits designed to support their personal development. At its heart is a commitment to ensuring that every pupil can explore new interests, develop existing skills, and enjoy shared experiences with peers and staff in a different setting.

Throughout the summer term, the breadth of activities on offer has been truly impressive. On-site, pupils have immersed themselves in creative and practical sessions including art, music, drama (both the Junior and Senior Plays), summer cookery, digital photography, gardening club, and soft toy making. Meanwhile, the school fields have been alive with sporting energy, with pupils taking part in rounders, rugby and football, and cricket.

Making the most of our unique location, our pupils have also been off-site, enjoying a host of adventurous and skill-building activities across Cornwall. Pupils have embraced opportunities such as surfing, skateboarding, horse riding, sailing, golf, watersports, and the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award programme, developing resilience, confidence, and teamwork along the way.

The aims of the WAA programme are central to the Truro School ethos: to promote healthy lifestyles, foster new skills in a safe and supportive environment, and encourage enjoyment through shared experiences across year groups.

Just as importantly, pupils gain a sense of achievement and purpose, whether contributing to a team, mastering a new technique, or simply discovering a new passion.

These experiences also play a vital role in preparing pupils for life beyond school. Through WAAs, they cultivate essential qualities such as self-discipline, commitment, leadership, and confidence.

A huge thanks to all of the staff involved in setting up and running this incredible programme. We look forward to sharing more excitement from the Autumn Term in September.
