Putting the Green in Greenpower

Our Greenpower afterschool club recently celebrated the culmination of months of innovation, teamwork and dedication at an exciting Greenpower race day held at Predannack Airfield.

Led by Mrs Knight, pupils have spent many weeks designing, building and refining their electric car in line with the Greenpower challenge, an initiative that promotes sustainability, engineering skills and environmentally responsible design. Central to the project is the requirement to create a vehicle powered purely by electricity, encouraging students to think carefully about efficiency, materials and environmental impact throughout the build process.

Our team fully embraced these eco-friendly principles, producing a truly eye-catching and thoughtful design. The car’s chassis was covered in recycled cardboard and beautifully decorated with scattered wildflowers, perfectly reflecting the ethos of the competition and their commitment to sustainability.

Race day itself was a thrilling and fast-paced experience, with teams taking part in a series of challenges including slalom, drag and sprint races. Each team was given multiple attempts, requiring careful organisation and teamwork, with pupils taking on specific roles to ensure everything ran smoothly. Our Truro School Prep demonstrated impressive skill and composure, carefully considering braking points, maintaining control through technical sections and striving for speed in the sprint race.

Safety and preparation were key throughout the day, with every team member working hard to ensure our drivers were securely strapped in with helmets, gloves and overalls, and fully confident in operating their vehicles. The professionalism shown by our pupils, both on and off the track, was a real credit to the school.

It was a fantastic event that not only showcased the pupils’ engineering and problem-solving abilities but also highlighted their commitment to sustainability and creative thinking. The Truro School Prep team should be incredibly proud of their efforts, and we look forward to seeing how the project develops in the future.
