Poetry Slam Speaker

Have you ever heard of a Poetry Slam? Our 4th and 5th Year pupils had the pleasure of meeting and hearing World Poetry Slam Champion Harry Baker perform in the chapel this lunchtime.

Poetry slams began in Chicago in 1984 and were designed to move poetry recitals from academia to a popular audience. American poet Marc Smith believed the poetry scene at the time was “too structured and stuffy” and began experimenting by attending open-mic poetry sessions with a competitive element.

In 2012 Harry entered the Poetry Slam World Cup with 20 people from 20 countries, where he won the highest score with his brilliant poem ‘Paper People’ and became the youngest person to win the accolade. Fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Harry has been performing his heartfelt and humorous poetry worldwide. His brilliant tour ‘Unashamed’ brings him to Truro, where he will play live in the Burrell Theatre tonight. Tickets can be booked online or on the door (card only) from 6.30 pm. The show starts at 7.30 pm.
