Distinction in the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award

For the third year running, Truro School has been awarded Distinction in the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award for 2026, recognising the depth and breadth of environmental work carried out across the whole school community.

The judges praised pupils for raising awareness of Eco-Schools’ role in reducing eco-anxiety, using podcasts, videos and assemblies to promote positive environmental action, while also highlighting Year 2’s achievement of the Bronze, Silver and Gold RSPB Wild Challenge awards.

They noted the wide range of pupil-led actions in the school’s Action Plan, from increasing sustainable seafood sourcing to promoting recycling and reuse, and were particularly impressed by the work with the Power of 10 Charity, which has seen 70% of seafood sourced by the school now MSC certified, alongside campaigns on travel, waste and responsible consumption.

Judges also pointed to the way pupils have deepened their understanding of sustainable development, stewardship and conservation through curriculum work linked to Newquay Zoo and Cornish mining heritage, and to the school’s growing reach through collaborations with Beach Guardian, Healeys Cyder Farm and the Power of 10 Charity, engaging pupils, families and the wider community in meaningful environmental action.

Building on this success, the Senior School is now planning a Waste Audit using new data from Biffa, alongside work towards completing Count Your Carbon.

The Prep have expanded the ways pupils can get involved this term, from the weekly Eco Club to a new Green Team and Year 6 Eco Committee. Eco Club has been busy across the Prep site, making fire lighters from pinecones, turning foraged apples from the school’s trees into apple chutney and building a wormery, with all the worms later released back into the grounds.

The Eco Committee has focused on the school’s Plastic Free Schools status, achieving RHS Levels 1 to 4 last year, while pupils in Years 3 to 6 now recycle their glue sticks, make a ruler for life out of recycled plastic and carry refillable pens in their Truro School pencil cases. Year 5 pupils will also take part in the annual Greenpower race, where last year’s team built an electric car with a chassis covered in recycled cardboard and wildflowers for a race day at Predannack Airfield.

Across the Pre-Prep, caring for the environment is woven into the curriculum through regular Forest School sessions and initiatives such as litter picks and building bug hotels, bat boxes and other animal homes, with the focus on creating habitats where wildlife of all kinds can thrive. Year 2’s Gold award in the RSPB Wild Challenge is a clear sign of that commitment and enthusiasm.
