Cornwall School Mining Games Pre-Event Visit

A group of 23 Year 8 pupils visited the King Edward Mine Museum in Troon as part of the Cornwall School Mining Games (CSMG) pre-event visit.

After two weeks of training, this visit to June’s competition venue provided pupils with a fantastic opportunity to learn about Cornwall’s mining heritage whilst developing their skills in several of the competition disciplines.

During the day they learned about the operation of traditional Cornish mines with former mine surveyor and now Secondary Education Officer, John Polglase. During a guided tour of the tin processing mill they saw how the bulk rock is processed and the valuable tin-bearing minerals extracted for smelting.

These insights brought relevance to the mining disciplines of sawing, surveying, panning and mineral processing which they then enjoyed the opportunity to practise. It also enabled the pupils to appreciate the continued relevance and career-opportunities in Cornish mining today.
