An Unforgettable Jazz Concert

In an evening brimming with talent and emotion, Truro School’s music department put on an unforgettable showcase of jazz performances. The event, held in the Burrell Theatre, saw Old Truronians, current musicians, parents and staff coming together to celebrate Mr Thompson’s final Jazz Concert with Truro School.

First up was the Junior Band, led by Mr Thomson, delivering spirited renditions of classics like “Tequila” and “Jazzmine Tea.” Saxophonists took the stage next, with twelve talented Saxophonists playing “Sway”.

The Music Enrichment Ensemble, also under Mr Thomson’s guidance, delighted the audience with “Minnie the Moocher,” while the Cornish Brassties brought flair with their renditions of “You’re Never Fully Dressed” and “Putting on the Ritz.”

The Samba Band, injected infectious energy into the auditorium with their rendition of “Samba Funk.” The Silver Sax ensemble, featuring Old Truronians among others, dazzled with a Disney Medley arrangement.

But it was the Senior Jazz Orchestra that stole the show, delivering a mesmerising performance including “The Caboose” and a touching rendition of “If I Could,” featuring Noah G. Ella S’s vocals soared during “Spinning Wheel.” At the same time, Lilly W captivated with “Orange Coloured Sky.”

Throughout the night, Mr Thompson’s influence and passion for Jazz music were palpable. Truro School Head, Mr Johnson, noted that the pupils clearly enjoyed playing just as much as the audience enjoyed listening.

At the end of the evening, there was a retiring collection for Charlie’s Star, a charity to ‘Create Hope and Smiles’ for bereaved families.

Looking ahead, the calendar is packed with more musical events for 2024, including recitals, concerts, and festivals, promising further opportunities to appreciate the vibrant musical community at Truro School.
