Sixth Form Open Evening: A Journey to Outstanding Outcomes

This year’s Sixth Form Open Evening gave prospective families a clear answer to a question every Year 11 pupil asks: why choose Truro School for Sixth Form?

The answer at Truro School lies not just in our outstanding results, but in the journey and experiences that pupils have along the way.

Truro School firmly remains the leading A-Level provider in Cornwall, with 50% of grades awarded A*/A and over 80% at A* to B in 2026. Our ALPS scores place us in the top 10% of A-Level providers nationally, a measure of the real difference our teaching makes to each pupil’s progress from their starting point. For recent leaver Zack (CO26), who achieved A* in his EPQ, A* in Geography and As in Economics and RS and is off to Warwick to study Law, choosing Truro School “completely changed his trajectory”.

Visitors to the Open Evening discovered how Sixth Form at Truro School is a very different experience from Year 11, with a more collegiate feel and greater independence. Our Sixth Form is big enough to offer a diverse and exciting cohort, but small enough to ensure that no pupil gets lost along the way. Small class sizes and one-to-one support mean every pupil is known individually, with subject clinics and personalised pathways guiding them toward their goals.

Sam (CO26), who this summer achieved an A* in Maths, A* in Physics, A* in Computer Science and an A in Further Maths, is now off to Imperial College London to study Mechanical Engineering. When asked what helped him to achieve such an impressive outcome, his answer was simple: “My classes were small, and the teachers knew exactly what I needed, what I was good at, what I was bad at, and that really helped, especially in Further Maths. You can really get that one-to-one teaching from the teachers.”

Students at Truro School Sixth are challenged as well as supported. The Sixth Form Diploma, and a broad co-curricular programme spanning options like outdoor pursuits, sport, music, art and drama, ensures pupils don’t have to choose a single speciality. Our A-Level provision sits alongside options like C-Tec, Leiths and the EPQ, giving pupils room to pursue a genuinely broad range of interests while still being stretched in the classroom.

This breadth is matched by continued investment in facilities. The recent opening of The Ode has already transformed pupils’ experience of Sixth Form life, with a new Well Being Centre planned for Spring 2027 to further support our students.
