Students in Years 5 and 6 recently took part in the Junior Mathematical Challenge, a national competition organised by the UK Mathematics Trust. Designed primarily for students up to Year 8, the challenge encourages pupils to think creatively, solve complex problems and apply mathematical reasoning in unfamiliar situations, making it a particularly impressive undertaking for our younger participants.
The competition is far more than a standard maths test. Pupils tackled a series of stimulating multiple-choice problems that required logic, resilience and strategic thinking, with many questions designed to stretch even Year 8 pupils.
Undaunted, our Year 5 and 6 mathematicians approached the challenge with enthusiasm and determination, demonstrating excellent perseverance and a willingness to embrace difficult problems.
Taking part at such a young age gave pupils an exciting opportunity to experience high-level mathematical thinking well beyond their usual curriculum expectations. It was wonderful to see students rise to the occasion, showing confidence, curiosity and impressive problem-solving skills throughout the competition.
We are incredibly proud of all the children who participated and represented the school so positively.
Well done to the following children who were awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze certificates. This puts them working well above the expected maths level for their Key Stage, achieving such excellent results as expected of pupils in Key Stage 3.
Gold
Barney, who was awarded Gold and an invitation to the Junior Kangaroo 2026 follow-up round to be held at Truro School.
Silver
