All year groups (Years 7–13) receive dedicated PSHE lessons as part of the curriculum, led by our Head of PSHE and delivered by a specialist team of staff.
Aims of the PSHE Curriculum
The school is committed to supporting pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, while also preparing them for life beyond school. This includes promoting their future economic well-being through independent careers advice and guidance.
The Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) programme plays an integral role in meeting these responsibilities, alongside the development of pupils’ SMSC awareness through academic subjects, weekly Chapel services, and the daily life of a busy, multi-faith, co-educational Methodist school.
The PSHE programme leads on, and contributes to, the work of other areas of the school in developing pupils’ self-awareness, self-esteem and self-confidence; their understanding and appreciation of others; their understanding of the world around them at local, national and global levels; and their awareness and understanding of online safety, including the 4 Cs and the risks associated with exposure to illegal, inappropriate or harmful content.
In doing so, the PSHE programme and wider school life enable pupils to distinguish right from wrong and respect the law, accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative, and understand how they can contribute to community life. It also helps pupils to develop an appreciation of, and respect for, their own and other cultures in ways that promote tolerance and harmony between different cultural and religious traditions, and to grow into young adults equipped with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to thrive in modern society.
The PSHE curriculum is reviewed and updated regularly in response to KCSIE updates, contextual safeguarding and trends and patterns identified through the work of the Pastoral Team.
