Celebrating Success in National Maths Challenges

Truro School has enjoyed another remarkable year of mathematical achievement, with teams achieving exceptional results at both the UKMT Team Maths Challenge National Final in June and the UKMT Senior Team Challenge earlier this week. Our students demonstrated outstanding teamwork, determination and academic excellence.

Top UK Maths Achievement: Truro School Reaches UKMT National Final – Westminster, June

In June, four outstanding mathematicians, Arthur, Hannah, Sam and Verity, travelled to London to compete in the prestigious UKMT Team Maths Challenge (TMC) National Final, held at the historic RHS Halls in Westminster.

The event brought together the very best young mathematicians from across the UK. Only 72 teams out of 677 from across the UK qualified for this final, placing Truro School’s mathematicians within the top 10% nationally. Students travelled from all corners of the UK, including the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, and the competition also welcomed seven international teams from China through a partnership with ASEEDER.

Throughout the day, teams took on a series of challenging mathematical rounds and presented creative posters on the theme of geometry in plants. The hall was alive with energy, curiosity, and collaboration, an inspiring celebration of mathematical thinking at its finest.

Mr Nevill, Maths Elite Performance Programme Lead, praised the team’s performance:

“Arthur, Hannah, Sam and Verity represented the school – and the South West – with exceptional maturity and skill. They tackled every challenge with enthusiasm and real mathematical insight. We couldn’t be prouder of how they performed on a national stage.”

For the students, the experience was as memorable as it was enriching. One team member reflected:

“Travelling to London for the final was amazing. Competing in such a big venue felt exciting and a bit surreal, but we learned so much and loved every moment.”

Strong Performance in the UKMT Senior Team Challenge – Blundell’s School, November

This week, another quartet of mathematicians, Joseph, Roy, Sarang and Tom, took part in the UKMT Senior Team Maths Challenge, held at Blundell’s School. With a team drawn from Years 11 and 12, they were competing against several schools fielding older teams that included two Year 13 students.

Despite this, our students produced an exceptional performance. Across the entire day, they answered only three questions incorrectly, demonstrating not just accuracy but resilience and teamwork under pressure. They narrowly missed out on a podium finish, placing just outside the top three—but with time firmly on their side, the team is already motivated to return next year in pursuit of the title.

Mr Nevill once again led the team and commended their performance:

“To compete so strongly against older and more experienced teams is a testament to their ability and teamwork. They handled the toughest questions with real composure—I’m excited to see what they can achieve next year.”

A student on the team added:

“The atmosphere was intense but really fun. We worked well together and loved the challenge—next year we want to go one better!”

Academic Excellence at Truro School

Both events showcased not only our students’ mathematical talent but also their willingness to embrace challenge, collaborate under pressure, and aspire to excellence. Truro School remains committed to providing one of the best independent school academic experiences in the South West, empowering students to achieve excellence in the classroom and beyond.

We offer our warmest congratulations to all involved and extend our thanks to Mr Nevill for his leadership, enthusiasm and ongoing support of our elite mathematicians.
