Year 5 go Kayaking and Cooking and Year 6 enjoy Rowing, Kayaking and a BBQ – all at Stithians!
During June, each Year 5 class has enjoyed a great day at Stithians Reservoir. Having spent part of their Food and Plants lessons developing their own soup or healthy pot noodle recipes, they undertook a kayaking ‘circumnavigation’ of the reservoir, stopping to cook their own lunch of soup, noodles and bacon rolls on the way. As you can see they furthered their cooking, kayaking and navigational skills and had a wonderful time as well!
Cooking forms a part of the curriculum for all Prep pupils. They start by looking at food history, origin and growth in their Food & Plants lessons, which links in with various other areas of the School Curriculum. They also grow vegetables and herbs in the raised beds and polytunnel beside the tennis courts and learn food preparation and cooking. In Year 3 and 4 they make simple meals such as healthy pizzas and by Year 5 they are tackling Cornish pasties, as well as their soup and noodles. In Year 6, all they have learned comes together as they plan, prepare and cook (and also eat!) a full main course dish of their choice as part of their Diploma.
The team and life skills, plus the water confidence that the pupils gain in Year 5 at Stithians and on the River Fal, are built on further when they have a kayaking orienteering activity day as part of their Year 6 Diploma, where they learn to use a compass to find control points located around the shores of the lake.
There are some great photographs of these activities in our gallery.
