Truro School World Fencing Championships Report

Over the Easter holiday Will Deary, Yvonne Chart, Caitlin Maxwell and Maria Chart all travelled to Tashkent in Uzbekistan for the World U17 and U20 Fencing Championships. This event is the highlight of the fencing season with all the European and domestic tour events leading up to this end of season climax.
Will Deary, competing in the junior men’s sabre event had a tough day winning only one poole round, giving him a difficult draw in the tableau. He finished the event in 86th place. Yvonne Chart fought solidly all day clinching a 15-14 win in the last 64 before losing to a Chinese fencer. She finished the event in 31st place.
Caitlin Maxwell and Maria Chart, whilst still only 15 and 16 respectively, had qualified for the Under 17 and Under 20 women’s sabre teams. Maria Chart had a tough championships and she was defeated in the last 64 rounds of both the Under 17 and Under 20 events.
In the Under 20 event Caitlin narrowly won her nail biting last 64 fight 15-14 but lost in the last 32 to a Korean. She finished the event in 32nd place. But in the Under 17 event she followed up her recent 7th place finish at the Europeans with yet another gutsy 15-14 win in the last 32 before being defeated. Caitlin finished in 14th and will now start next season as European Under 17 number 1 and ranked in the top 25 in the World at Under 20.
