On Friday 6 May, the Truro Under 12 football team hosted Colfox School from Dorset in the last 16 of the ESFA National Small Schools Cup. This is a competition specifically for schools with less than 65 boys in a year group. Following wins in previous rounds over Humphry Davy and Ridgeway from Plymouth the players were eagerly anticipating the game and the opportunity to progress to the quarter final.
Colfox were a technically excellent side and dominated the early play, although Truro’s defensive shape remained strong and repelled several good attacks by the visitors. Truro began to contest possession more forcefully as the first half progressed and had the better chances to open the scoring, including one effort that hit the cross bar.
The score remained 0-0 at half time and it became evident that the game would be probably be decided on one or two opportunities. Midway through the second half, a rapid counter attack allowed the ever dangerous Joe Moran to strike a first time shot from a Ben Coston cross from the edge of the penalty area to give Truro a lead they managed to defend to full time despite a late onslaught from Colfox.
Truro now play St Bernard’s School from Slough, London, at home in the quarter final on Monday 16 May (kick off time to be confirmed).
