Following their qualification through both the county and regional heats, the team of Zoe M, Lloyd S, Georgia S and Abi W recently headed to London for the UKMT Team Maths Challenge final. On Sunday 21 June the quartet travelled by train to stay at Farringtons School in Chiselhurst, another member of the MIST school group. Farringtons were incredibly welcoming and the team enjoyed a meal out at Pizza Express with a number of Farrington’s students. Following a hearty breakfast, a short journey into London and a walk through Westminster, the team arrived at the venue.
Nearly 100 teams had reached the National Final, making for an intimidating sight at first arrival. However, within a few minutes the team were working their way through a few maths puzzles to warm-up ready for the main competition.
The first round was the poster round, a separate competition. The team had spent a week preparing materials on their topic and were given three questions on the day to include in the final A1 poster design. After an hour of hard work their poster was complete, full of colour, mathematical definitions and explanations and, most importantly, all three answers to the questions posed.
This round was followed by the group circus; a timed event that really stretches the brain. The team did well with some challenging questions making a good start to the competition. Following lunch there were three further rounds: the shuttle round, the cross number and the relay. The cross number was the team’s strongest round, with the relay a close second.
The four pupils made a superb team and were great ambassadors for Truro School. The team finished 85th out of nearly 100 schools that made it to the national final, and out of over 2000 schools participating nationwide.
