Truro School Students Manage to Get a Clean-Sweep in Badminton

This week students managed to take home four County Championships titles with all four teams winning their Badminton tournaments.

This is the first time in the history of Truro School that all four teams have made it to the regional finals.

Representing the Under 14 Boys was Ashay Divekar, Ollie Beaumont, Ashley Faulds, Jason Ayliffe, and Max Caddis. The Under 14 Girls team includes Joanna Vyvyan, Lizzie Straw, Harriet Bradley, Marlee Campbell, and Nancy Read.

Meanwhile the Under 16 Boys team includes George Law, Tom Purchas, Gryffyn Parris, Rufus Martin and Alex Beaumont. Under 16 Girls Melissa Lin, Beckie Bailey, Maddie Griffiths and Nila Kandasamy.

Each team played in a pool of four teams who has all qualified from their peninsula areas with schools such as Mounts Bay Academy and the Roseland Academy competing.

Cliff Morcom, Badminton Coach at Truro School, said

“I felt that the teams played first and foremost to enjoy themselves today. All four teams played consistently throughout. Hopefully we can get to the finals again, but obviously the South West regionals are going to be incredibly tough.”

He also commented on why he believes that Badminton is continually improving at Truro School

“The new Sir Ben Ainslie Sports Centre facility has helped us take badminton to the next level at Truro School. We can now train for harder and for longer with a total of 8 courts. We run two training sessions per week and seek to develop players of all abilities, from beginners to county-ranked players.”

The event was hosted at Truro School as part of the Cornwall School Games, sponsored by University of Exeter.

Last year our Under 16 Girls Team made it to the National Finals and picked up Silver, the school’s best Badminton achievement yet.
