On Sunday, Finn, Harris, Alexander, Benjy, Jacob and Isaac travelled to Exeter race course to run for Cornwall in the South-West Inter-Counties and Inter-Club Championships.
The boys had a hugely successful day competing against the top county and club runners from across the region (Avon, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, and Wiltshire). The weather was fine and ground conditions were good on this mildly undulating course and so fast times were expected. Medals were to be awarded to the top three runners in each race and the top three county and club teams in each race (with the first four runners for each county and club team scoring points).
Jacob and Isaac were first to run in the Under 13 Boys race and both put in fine performances coming in 25th and 31st respectively out of a field of 66 runners. As a scoring runner Isaac also helped his club team to the bronze medal position.
Harris and Benjy were up next in the Under 15 Boys race. Harris continued his fine run of form with another dominant display to win by a comfortable margin. Benjy also ran extremely well to be placed 15th out of 60, a very good result given that he is a year young in this age group. As scoring runners in the County event, Harris and Benjy both collected gold medals with the victorious Cornwall team and Benjy also picked up a silver medal with his club team.
Under 17 Boys, Finn and Alexander, were the final Truro School runners of the day. Finn showed fine form for this stage of the season, also winning comfortably. Alexander went off a bit too fast and suffered for it in the middle of the race but still managed to recover to a very good 11th out of 44 runners. Great results as both are a year young and they were rewarded with gold medals in both the County and Club Team events.
Congratulation go to Finn and Harris; as regional champions, they have been selected to represent the South-West at the Virgin London Mini-Marathon in April.
This has been an excellent start to the second half of the season by the school cross country runners and they now look forward to the National Inter-Counties finals in March and the start of the Schools’ Cross Country competition in two weeks’ time.
