Truro School students Caitlin Maxwell and Maria Chart have just been ranked as the 5th and 8th best European fencers for their age group respectively.
The new rankings have been announced after an exceptional performance at the latest European Circuit Event in which Truro won gold in the team event.
Competing at under 17 level, the pair were in action on home soil last weekend in London and certainly took advantage of being in front of their home crowd.
The event, which took part in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, included 64 of Europe’s most gifted fencers from all around Europe.
Despite the high level of competition, it was the individual performances of the Truro School duo that took the plaudits with Caitlin finishing in a strong 6th place and Maria standing on the podium with the bronze medal.
Mrs Jupp, Head of Fencing:
‘This is a remarkable achievement for both these girls who are still competing under the Under 17 age category and hopefully it bodes well for the upcoming European Championships in Slovenia.’
The elite pairing might even have made more progress in the tournament had they not been drawn against each other in the quarter finals.
The good friends became foes as Caitlin and Maria battled hard against each other; Maria edging the victory 15 points to 12.
‘Having done the hard yards since last summer we are now at the business end of the season and the fantastic results just keep rolling in. I am incredibly proud of what our pupils are achieving and this weekend was no different!’
The fencing team at Truro School now focus their attention on Maribor, Slovenia on the 24th February where a much larger field of opponents are set to feature.
