Truro School musicians jazz up ballet performance

The Truro School Jazz Orchestra debuted in the Nutcracker alongside the Duchy Ballet.

The first half of the ballet was a traditional rendition of The Nutcracker followed by the Jazz Orchestra’s live performance of Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker suite.

The pupils performed with great virtuosity, with exceptional solos from several individuals including clarinet solos by Fred Breham and Sophie Poat, a sax solo from Lowenna Wearne and a trumpet solo from Katie Martin.

Music teacher, Mr Thomson, said

“This is an extremely exciting collaboration with Duchy Ballet – the first time they have worked with Truro School musicians. It is a thrilling score and was a real challenge for the Jazz Orchestra to get their teeth into.”

There was also a selection of Truro School pupils on the stage demonstrating their impressive ballet abilities.

The shows took place in the Hall for Cornwall over three days and was commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Duchy Ballet Company.
