Early Years FAQs

Truro School Prep, Cornwall | Frequently Asked Quetions

The following page provides answers to commonly asked questions by prospective parents of children aged 7 or younger.

What is the Reception Class?

This is the class your child will join in the September after their fourth birthday.

Do you accept students before Reception Year?

Yes. Truro School Nursery accepts pupils aged 3-4, giving children a head start to their education.

Will my child still be able to attend part-time when he/she joins the Reception Class?

No. All pupils who enter the Reception Class are required to attend full-time from 8.40am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Can I use Childcare Vouchers when I pay the fees?

Yes. We confirm that we are able to accept Child Care Vouchers for fees until the term following the child’s fifth birthday as long as all other conditions surrounding the use of the vouchers are satisfied.

Does my child have to wear school uniform?

Yes. All pupils wear an age appropriate version of the school uniform.

I want my child to come to this school, what do I need to do?

Come and visit us. We run Open Days each term, informal guided tours on most Tuesday mornings or you can make an appointment to have a tour with the EYFS Coordinator. We would be delighted to see you and your children. For more info, check the welcome page on the website or contact the Head’s Secretary.

I have already visited the school. What do I do now?

Complete the blue registration form which is found inside the Prospectus and return it to the Head’s Secretary with the registration fee of £50.

Does returning a registration form guarantee my child a place?

No. There may be a waiting list for your child’s class. We will, however, immediately confirm in writing whether your child has secured a place or been placed on a waiting list.

For children aged 5 years and over (for entry into Year 1 and Year 2) there is an entry process, which, at least, entails the child joining a class here for a day. This will be explained in detail on a preliminary tour of the school.

Do you cater for pupils who require special diets and do your menus include foods from other world cultures?

We have a fantastic in-house catering team who will do their best to meet any special dietary needs the pupils may have. The menus are designed to reflect different world cultures.  There is always a vegetarian option available.

Who helps my child choose a balanced meal?

The teachers, assistants and kitchen staff will all encourage the pupils to make sensible choices.  Parents are given the menus and may indicate to the teacher their child’s preferences for each day.

Do the children learn a foreign language?

Yes. French is taught from Reception to Year 2.

Do the children have music lessons?

Yes. Each class has one music lesson per week.

Can my child learn a musical instrument?

Yes – from Year 2 onwards. Year 2 pupils may also learn another instrument, such as the guitar, violin, cello, drums or piano, but only with the consent of their Class Teacher. We also offer singing lessons.

Do you offer swimming and, if so, how often will my child have swimming lessons?

Yes.  We have our own heated indoor pool on site. Full-time pupils swim twice a week. Part-time pupils swim at least once per week (subject to attending on one of the three swimming days).

Can my child have ballet lessons?

Yes. Parents can opt for their child to attend ballet classes, which are taught by a specialist teacher, for a small additional charge.

Do you have an Early Birds’ Club and an After School Care Club?

Yes. Early Birds’ Club is available for pupils in the dining hall from 7.45am. Supervision is free. The usual charge of £2.50 applies if your child requires a breakfast.  For those who are not eating, there will be simple games and activities.

There is an After School Care Club that runs from 3:45pm to 5:30pm and is held in the Pre-Prep building where a variety of activities are available. Pupils can also order a packed tea for £3.20 for them to take away for the journey home.  At 5.30pm, all pupils still at the club will be brought across to the Dining Hall to join the Supper Club, from where they should be collected. Supper Club starts at 5.30pm and continues until 6.15pm. There is a supervision charge of £6 made for all children who attend for any part of this time.
