The u15 and u19 Truro School teams were in action simultaneously in the 3rd round of the National schools last Wednesday in their bids to reach the top 20 of the National school Squash rankings and therein the knockout phase of the National cup competition.
The u15s were represented by Jason Ayliffe, Rufus Martin, Josh Mitchell, Louis Murray and Jack Mahon and came up against a very strong Exeter team who managed to finish in 5th place last year and were eager to repeat this year too. The match was immensely exciting, even dramatic, and went all the way with the away team just beating our Truro boys 3 matches to two, Louis and Jack picking up our winning strings. Massive credit should go to the team who qualified comfortably for the knockout phase in second place in the group and with some quality training and hard work could definitely progress further in the competition.
The u19s had a pretty tall order against the Exeter boys who arrived full of confidence and belief. However our team soon got stuck in and somewhat took our opponents by surprise with strong wins at no5 for Billy Bateson and no4 for Oscar Pringle to give us a two nil lead and requiring just one more string to progress. At no3 Ollie Brocklebank then played out a huge encounter with his rival which could have gone either way but was eventually won by Exeter in a close 3/1 result. Next on was Callum Penry at no2 who had a very experienced and clever rival to face and despite having game balls he steadily succumbed 3/0 leaving the match in the balance at two strings all. It was therefore down to the wire at no 1 string with Ethan Elwell and another formidable player from the away team. In a repeat of the no2s Ethan also had game balls which he couldn’t convert and unfortunately lost 3/0 in three tight games and with it our chances of qualifying.
All in all it was a huge match between the two Schools which lasted nearly 3 hours in total and clearly Truro School is progressing nicely in the right direction in the Squash world.
