June saw Truro Prep School face St Hilary School in the Cornwall Under 11 Hardball Final, having beaten both Mount Hawke and Charlestown School in the previous rounds of the cup.
St Hilary were tough opponents having a reputation of producing some of the county’s best cricketers. Truro lost the toss and were batting first. A fine opening from Henry and Thom, who really attacked the ball, appeared to rattle the hosts. This was quickly followed by a hat trick of 4s and some cleverly timed singles by Wilf G and Sam. The penultimate pairing of Silas and Wilf B proved to be similarly tactically minded with soft deft shots enabling the pair to score highly. The final pairing of George and Finn facing St Hilary’s most accomplished bowler managed to add respectably to the final score leaving St Hilary chasing 265 for victory. The young Truro side then showed measure and maturity beyond their years as St Hilary fought in vain to overcome the score Truro had surmounted. A turning point in the game being two successive wickets from Silas, just as St Hilary’s confidence was starting to grow. Following a tense final over from George, Truro Prep had secured victory by five runs. They now go forward to represent Cornwall in the Under 11 Divisional Championships at King’s College Taunton on Monday 18 June, we wish them every success in the tournament.
