Rugby Summary Week Beginning 19 September 2016

On Monday 19 September, the U15 side travelled to Mounts Bay for a county cup game and performed moderately as they were well beaten by a more aggressive and direct side.

On Wednesday 21 September there were some re-shuffling of fixtures with the cancellation by Colston’s of the 1st XV match alongside the cancellation of all five junior matches by Bodmin College.

The 1st XV travelled to Bodmin College and found themselves in a very physical encounter, going into the interval holding a narrow 12-5 lead. The game opened up somewhat in the second half and gaps appeared in the Bodmin defence as they tired somewhat, allowing Truro to run in several outstanding tries to win the game 38-5. Tries were scored by Dom Goodwin (2), Sam Haywood (2), Troy Sixton and Tom Weightman, with Callum Penry converting 4 tries.

On the same day the 2nd XV were outstanding against their much bigger opponents from Truro College.

With a number of U16 players featuring, the squad had a fresh energy, and in the early stages looked competitive. A defensive error allowed the College 3rd XV in for an early try, but Ollie Davies hit back with an impressive solo effort.  With their heads up, the school began to totally dominate at this point, with plenty of great work by the forwards, led by the outstanding Olly Pugh. Total domination was seen in the second half, and the intensity demonstrated by the school was simply too much for the College. Further tries were scored by the excellent Rory Heard, Fahed Alothman, Alex Riley and Billy Bateson. Jordan Opie converted the final try to give Truro a 27-5 win.

On Saturday 24 September, five matches were played against Mount Kelly from Tavistock.

In the home games, the 2nd XV hosted Mount Kelly 1st XV and emerged narrow 30-26 victors in a thrilling game. The U15s confidence was boosted as they won their first game of the season 35-5.

In the fixtures played at Tavistock, the U12Bs won 30-10, the U13Bs won 35-10 and the U14Bs won 17-12.

On Sunday 25 September, Cornwall U16s played Devon U16s in Exeter and it was particularly pleasing to note that 12 boys from school were selected to represent the county A and B squads on that day:

Callum Penry, Troy Sixton, Olly Pugh, Billy Bateson, Toby Armstrong, Alfie Burns, Charlie Armstrong, Jamie Elderkin, Charlie Standen, Ollie Brocklebank, Toby Haywood and Roan Kitto
