Louis Murray came 19th in a very strong 64 player draw at the French Junior Open (Under 15s) in Lille this weekend.
Louis moved up to Under 15s less than 3 months ago and has already achieved 21st place in December’s Scottish Junior Open and 57th in an extremely strong 128 draw British Junior Open in January (one of the top junior tournaments attracting some of the best players in the world).
In the 1st Round Louis played Antoine Ratouit (ranked No. 12 in France). Louis played great squash and won 11-7, 11-7, 11-3.
In the 2nd Round Louis was drawn against the No 1 seed, Alex Smith. Alex in ranked 3rd in Europe and was a very strong favourite (he moves into Under 17s next week). Louis competed very well with the highly ranked player, losing 7-11, 3-11, 7-11.
Next up was Matteo Carrouget (ranked 8 in France). This was a very difficult match against a tricky opponent. Louis kept his head and played intelligent squash, winning 12-10, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9.
Next saw Louis convincingly beat Jake Creaven (ranked No 6 in Ireland) 11-6, 11-6, 11-7.
Louis then played the very talented Belgian No 1, Antoine Allard. In the 2nd round Antoine had match balls in the 5th game against the eventual runner-up of the French Junior Open, Egyptian Abdullah Amr. At this years British Junior Open Louis lost to Antoine in a great game of squash. Louis continued to play very competitively and made Antoine earn every point. It was a fantastic game with great athletic ability and superb sportsmanship from both players. Louis lost 5-11, 6-11, 5-11.
19th place in a very strong draw of top international players was a great result for Louis. Next up is the English Championships in Hull on 9 March.
