Fencing Report: 14 January 2019

This weekend our Under 17s moved on to Meylan, France for the next of the international circuit events. In action this week were: Roman Norris (FRA), Jack Wong (HKG), Darcy Holdsworth (GBR) and Max Cromie (GBR). Jack Wong and Max Cromie had a difficult start to the morning each claiming 1 and 2 victories in the pooles respectively. This left them with an uphill task and a difficult seeding towards the bottom third of the draw. Max was defeated 15-10 in the last 128 to finish 81st, and Jack lost 15-6 to take 100th place. After a superb start in the pooles winning 5 fights and losing his sixth in a narrow defeat 5-4, Roman Norris stormed to the top end of the leader board taking the 10th seeding going into the direct elimination. Unfortunately, he lost in the last 32 in the narrowest of margins 15-14, to finish in 17th place.  Darcy Holdsworth made difficult work of the morning taking 2 victories in the pooles and giving him a seeding of 75th going into the direct elimination rounds. However, he regrouped and stormed through the draw with an “all or nothing” attitude. He beat the 54th seed 15-8 in the last 128, knocked out the 11th seed with an impressive 15-3 victory in the last 64, took out the 22nd seed in the last 32 15-10 but finally in the last 8 he was defeated, again by the narrowest of margins 15-14, by the eventual finalists. He finished in an excellent 8th place; a fantastic weekend of international competition.
