On Wednesday 26 November the 1st XV travelled to play Exeter College in the 5th Round of the Under 18 National NatWest Cup.
Having been given Cullompton RFC as the venue for the match, the side arrived in good time and began preparations for what would be a challenging encounter with last season’s Vase finalists. With 45 minutes to kick off and no sign of the opposition, phone calls were made and it transpired that Exeter had made a mistake and were in fact waiting at Wessex RFC in Exeter for us! The side then made the exhausting hour long trip through Exeter to the ground, followed by a 3.10pm KO and agreed 30 minute periods.
Despite the disruption and mental exhaustion, Truro played some excellent rugby to take an 18:0 lead at the interval with tries from James Rowe and Toby Robinson, with Matt Poole kicking two penalties and a conversion. Exeter responded strongly in the second half and were well worthy of their try with five minutes remaining. Truro now travel to Sherborne on Wednesday 3 December for the Round 6 match hoping to make the last 16 in the competition for the fourth successive year.
On Thursday 27 November, the Under 15 side also played their 5th Round NatWest Cup match at Ivybridge, confident of a good result following their 24:24 draw with the Devon side on the opening fixture of the season in September. However, the 1800 pupil school proved too strong, running out 34:5 winners.
On Saturday 29 November the school had a new block fixture against West Buckland from North Devon. In the home matches, wins were enjoyed by the 1st XV, Under 16s (38:0) and Under 15s (49:15).
The 1st XV, without injured players Ed Jane and Rob Grigg and South West trialists James Rowe and James Bishop, dominated proceedings to win comfortably 40:3. Tries were scored by Toby Robinson (2), Josh Hart, Cameron Sayer, Rory Pugh and a penalty try, following a strong driving line-out towards the West Buckland line by Truro. Matt Poole kicked 4 conversions. Dan Whitmore marked his final appearance in a Truro School shirt as captain and a conversion that Jonny Wilkinson would have been proud of with the last kick of the match – to thunderous applause!
The Under 16s and Under 15s both enjoyed big wins over West Buckland and, in the matches away at West Buckland, the Under 12s and Under 13s won 59:7 and 52:5 respectively, whilst the Under 14B team, playing the opposition A side, lost 36:17 having been 31:7 down at half-time.
Congratulations this week go to James Rowe and James Bishop of the 1st XV who have been selected for the South West Under 18 team and are now only one step away from an England Under 18 cap. At Under 16 level, congratulations also go to Josh Hart who has been selected for South West trials.
