On Wednesday 3 December, the 1st XV made the three hour journey to Dorset to play Sherborne School in the 6th Round of the National Under 18 NatWest Cup.
Despite missing four first choice players due to injury, the side started well and the game was evenly matched in the first half. Truro suffered a blow with an early injury to Josh Hart but were still very much in the game with the score at 5-3 to the home side after 38 minutes.
In the dying seconds of the half, Angus Edmondson was sin-binned for collapsing a maul, and from the subsequent attack Sherborne scored a second try to take a 12-3 lead at the interval.
Within minutes of Edmondson returning to the field, prop Euan Davidson was also binned for the same offence and during this period of 20 minutes with 14 players, Truro conceded another 3 quick tries and the game was effectively beyond Truro’s reach.
Sherborne played some excellent rugby in the second half and were well-deserved victors by 46-3.
On the same day, the Under 14 side progressed to the county cup final for the third successive year with a comprehensive 48-0 win at Newquay Tretherras. Our Under 12 A and B sides also played at Newquay, with both earning hard-fought wins.
On Sunday 7 December, the 1st XV played their last game of the term against a strong Cornwall Under 17 team. Captain James Rowe scored the opening try to give Truro a 5-0 first half lead. Cornwall responded strongly after the interval and deservedly levelled the scores midway through the second half, before an outstanding individual try by Toby Robinson gave Truro a narrow 10-5 victory over the representative side.
Congratulations are due to Toby Robinson, who, following impressive performances for the Irish Exiles, has been selected for Ireland Under 18 Clubs XV to play Ireland Schools in late December.
Meanwhile, James Rowe and James Bishop are also to be congratulated on their selection for the South West Under 18 side and are only a step away from an England Under 18 Schools and Clubs cap.
