Last week, Rufus Martin from the 2nd Year competed at the Volvo Gill Optimist End of Seasons Championship at Rutland.
The event is the last national ranking event of the season, with over 300 optimist sailors attending – but this was the first time that Rufus had raced in the Main Fleet of a national event alongside GBR squad sailors, as well as international sailors from France, Spain and Malta.
Although the Main Fleet was out for five hours on the first day, no racing could be completed due to the lack of wind. The second day dawned with thick fog and once again no wind, but the sun burned off the mist mid-morning and, as forecast, a gentle breeze kicked in from the east, allowing three races to be held on Sunday afternoon (pictured).
For his first national event, Rufus was expecting to be towards the back end the Main Fleet. However in the first race he came in 14th out of 110, even beating some GBR squad sailors. Overall he was placed 44th out of 210 boats which was a fantastic result for a first national event.
Rufus will need to attend two more events in the spring to gain a formal GBR ranking.
