On the weekend of 27-28 September, Rufus Martin from the 2nd Year competed amongst 77 Olympic hopefuls at the RYA South West Zone Championship held at Paignton Sailing Club, winning his class on his debut appearance.
Rufus, who sails at Restronguet Sailing Club, was competing in the Optimist class and won three out of his six races, finishing just one point ahead of his nearest rival to claim event honours. After no wind and a mirror-like Torbay on the first day, the competitors raced in 5-7 knots of breeze on the second. The final race of the day saw the top three boats overlapping after 40 minutes, highlighting how close the racing was.
Rufus was delighted with his win. He said: “It was really exciting over the whole weekend and very close against one of my own club mates from Restronguet Sailing Club. I am extremely surprised and happy to win, even though it meant beating one of my great friends.”
The event attracted an assortment of sailors, supporters and volunteers from clubs and training centres across Great Britain and has given the young competitors the chance to experience big regatta racing without having to travel far from their home sailing clubs.
