Saturday 22 November 2014, The London Aquatic Centre, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London
On Saturday, four young swimmers from Truro School got the experience of a lifetime when they travelled to The London Aquatic Centre, the pool used in the London 2012 Olympic Games, to race in the National Teams’ Swimming Championships. We were the only school from Cornwall to qualify.
Captain Tom Leigh was selected by the organisers as the flag bearer for the South West at the opening ceremony; he led all the teams from the South West in the parade.
The four boys competed in the Medley Relay where they each swam 50m (long course). Luke Barnsley in Backstroke, Sam Norton in Breaststroke, Tom Leigh in Butterfly and Alexander Beaumont in Freestyle. They recorded a time of 2.25.22 and finished in a credible 15th position in England. They knocked 1 second of their qualifying time from the regional finals.
The boys’ split times were:
Back stroke – Luke (36.76)
Breaststroke – Sam 1.15.13 (38.37)
Butterfly – Tom 1.49.16 (34.03)
Freestyle – Alex 2.25.22 (36.06)
Zoe Jobling, Head of Swimming at Truro School, said: “This was an incredible experience for these four boys, three of whom will still be in the correct age band next year; so the future looks very promising indeed. The hard work that the boys and Coach Matt Trewhella have put in has certainly paid off.”
Each pupil received a certificate and a swim hat as a souvenir of the day.
