If you watched any of the incredible hockey matches at Rio 2016, then like me, you will probably have been hooked. The GB hockey team are now gold medal winners, and crucially they are inspiring role models for younger players.
It’s quite simple – our players have seen exciting, fast matches and now they want to play too…
Several of our Year 6 players are now playing in local club teams and some have also been selected to train in the JDC sessions (Cornwall’s Junior Development Centre) this season, even though they still have another year in this age group.
This week, we took our Year 6 girls to Truro High School. We had two squads of players, who all participated in the 6 aside matches. The generous amount of time on the pitch – four quarters of 10 minutes – allowed plenty of goals to be scored for both teams.
Well done to the B team, for winning their closely contested match (3-2). Aimee and Olivia played well together in defence. Rosie and Tara also worked together closely in attack – and set up and scored several goals for the team.
In the A team match, Daisy and Amelia worked hard together in defence, showing real determination. Lexie and Melissa played with increased confidence and worked well together in attack to score a goal each. Although the A team didn’t win their match, they shouldn’t be disappointed at all; they scored several goals, enjoyed themselves tremendously and improved their positional awareness during the match.
Thank you to all the parents who came to watch. It was lovely to have your support.
