Truro School's Windsurfing Success

Finn wins Gold at the RYA National championships U15 & Lachlan Ross takes Bronze for the U17 boys.

It has been a busy summer for some of the Truro school windsurfers, last weekend saw one of the UK’s largest windsurfing events which took place at Rutland Water, the RYA National championship saw over 220 competitors competing for the national titles.

Max Beaman (GBR 3226) put in a solid series , finishing 8th in the U15 boys and 25th overall, whilst Lachlan Ross (GBR 383) who has recently moved up to the 7.8m class, had some great races to complete his series with an 8th overall and a podium 3rd U17 boy, Finn Hawkins (GBR 19) narrowly missed the overall win by one point, finishing 1st U15 and 2nd overall laying claim to the RYA National Championship U15 title.  The National Cup was presented by Bryony Shaw who has just returned from the 2016 Rio Olympics (Team GBR – Olympian)

Over the summer Finn, Max and Lachlan have been competing in the UKWA national cup series, these events take place all around the UK from Christchurch, Bridlington, Herne Bay, Pwlhelli and Weymouth the series ends at Stokes Bay in October.

In Pwlhelli Lachlan achieved his first solid top ten result whilst Finn had an exceptional performance winning the Under 15’s and 17’s overall, this has put Finn in a very strong position going into the final event of 2016 where Finn is currently UK ranked 2nd, Lachlan 31st and Max 53rd.

Finn and Lachlan competed in the Techno 293 European championships in Sopot, Poland, this was a very challenging event with over 330 competitors in light shifty conditions, Finn worked extremely hard in the U15 boys 6.8m fleet finishing a respectable 10th overall, whilst Lachlan narrowly missed out on Gold fleet but had some fantastic races in his first international event, this would be Lachlan’s last event in the U15 6.8m class as he moves on to the larger 7.8m sail.

Up next is the RYA Zone Championships at the Nationals sailing Academy Weymouth in September, and the “Techno 293 World championships” at Lake Garda, Italy in October, where all three windsurfers will be competing.
