Truro School students celebrate Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

The certificate highlighted the volunteering section from the 137 participants that completed the award between April 2017 and March 2018. This included 70 Bronze Awards, 35 Silver Awards, and 32 Gold Awards. 

In total participants completed 3328 hours of learning a skill, 3185 hours of physical activity and 3497 hours of volunteering within the local community.

When put into monetary value to the social value of volunteering in the community (calculated at £4.05 min hourly rate for under 18s) this accumulates to £14,162.85; the largest of any Duke of Edinburgh establishment in the South West. This is a huge achievement for all who completed their award.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is the world’s leading youth achievement award and is valued by both universities and employers.

Truro School is recognised as a centre of excellence in the South West for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award with well over a hundred students completing either the Bronze, Silver or Gold Award each year.

Outdoor pursuits is considered to be an integral part of Truro School life, and although an optional co-curricular activity, it continues to be a popular choice.

Coordinator of Outdoor Pursuits, Mike Cucknell, said,

“The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is the perfect opportunity for students to work together as a team and comes with huge rewards. It allows them to grow in confidence, skills and ability.”
