Broadening the foundations of the national curriculum
Truro School Prep, who work to a more rounded Prep Diploma curriculum, is thrilled to have maintained excellent standards in literacy and numeracy in its most recent results. Taking reading as an example, over the last 12 months pupils have averaged a 17.45 month increase in reading age, 45% above the national standard.
The latest results show that Year 3 pupils have moved up into Year 4 with an average reading progress level of 17.4 months whilst spellings averaged 14.2 months. Additionally, pupils who have progressed into Year 5 attained a reading progress of 15.55 months, and in Year 6 the average progress was 19.4 months, all far exceeding the 12 month standard.
Broadening the foundations of the national curriculum, the Prep Diploma focuses on six specific areas of learning including foreign languages, creative and performing arts, cooking and humanities as well as the core academic subjects. This widening of curriculum allows a more holistic approach to primary education, with pupils assessed throughout their daily activities as well as organised activity days during their final year at the Prep School. This close monitoring of pupil progression ensures a continued and constant improvement throughout the individual’s time at the school, as reflected in the results.
Sarah Patterson, Head of Truro School Prep explains,
“It is wonderful to see the hard work of our pupils and teachers coming to fruition in this outstanding set of progress results. At Truro School Prep, the Prep Diploma expands and broadens the foundations of the national curriculum by allowing children to understand their own abilities and strengths, and develop them into balanced confident young adults. By conducting regular, formative assessments throughout their education, teachers are able to work closely with pupils, monitoring wellbeing as well as ensuring continued progress.”
